Herb Emory was raised in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. He was in the sixth grade when the radio bug bit him. He swept floors and empty trash at WPNF in Brevard. He worked part time and obtained his third class radiotelegraph operators Certificate during junior and senior high school. Then it was off to The Atlanta School of Broadcasting. He got a job as an intern at WIIN, 970 AM. He worked with Georgia Radio Hall of Fame Legacy Inductee, Skinny Bobby Harper, monitoring WSB for traffic and weather. After that Herb worked at WSNE in Cumming, WDGL in Douglasville, WACX in Austell, and the Georgia News Network. At WFOM in Marietta, he did everything from news to a jock shift to being sidekick to GRHoF Inductee, “Big” Hugh Baby. Then Herb went to WQXI AM/ 94Q/Star 94 and spent 12 years there and was traffic reporter for the Steve and Vikki Morning show. In 1991, Emory joined GRHoF Inductee McKee’s “Hometown Morning Show” on WSB. Today, Capt. Herb reports the snafus, snarls, and smashups on Atlanta’s interstate, highways, and side streets from the infamous “Skycopter Lounge. Herb is also a huge auto racing fan and, with wife Karen, hosts a NASCAR talk show on WSB on Saturday afternoons. Herb has earned at least 15 First Place Awards, including two Green Eyeshades, for news and traffic reports from the Georgia Associated Press Association, and other media organizations. He served as President of the GAPBA in 1990/91 and is a 2008 Georgia Radio Hall of Fame Career Achievement Inductee.
