Bill McCain
1916-1971
Bill McCain was born in Eureka Springs, Arkansas and began his radio career in Fort Smith Arkansas at KFPW. While attending the University of Arkansas he worked at KUOA in Fayetteville.
In the late 30's he left KVOO in Tulsa to go to WERC in Birmingham. Bill had the voice of a network announcer. He was courted by the NBC and CBS radio networks, but, was happy to remain in Birmingham where he was known as "The Voice of The South" . McCain also did commercial voice work including the memorable radio commercial for SSS Tonic.
In 1944, he moved to WAGA in Atlanta. He then became news director at WAKE. Bill Drake was the program director at WAKE and when he left to go to San Francisco, McCain went with Drake and became KYA News Director.
McCain did not like the climate in San Francisco and returned to Atlanta where he worked at WQXI and WSB before settling in as General Manager and ultimately, Vice President and General Manager of WGKA AM/FM.
