Don Elliott Heald
Don Heald was born in Concord Massachusetts on July 7, 1922 and attended public school in Lakeland, Florida. He attended the University of Florida and fell in love with radio while working at the college station. He accepted a position at WRUF in Gainesville after graduation and stayed there until moving to Atlanta to do post-graduate work at Emory and work at WCON as on air personality and news director, then WSB AM. Then he was known as Don Elliott. He eventually moved to WSB Television where he became Vice President and General Manager. Heald was the voice of the Audichron Time-Weather-Temperature Service. His voice was heard answering hundreds of calls daily from people wanting to know the correct time in cities throughout the United States and abroad. In May of 1955, Heald became the voice of Time/Frequency Station WWV, Fort Collins, Colorado, the radio station of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, headquartered in Boulder. He was also the host of The Protestant Hour, a syndicated radio program of an association of denominations for 50 years. Every year he also provided the voiceover for the live Christmas Eve broadcast from the Cathedral of St. Philip. Heald was chairman of the American Cancer Society. In 1987, he was “instrumental” in moving the charity’s headquarters from New York City to Atlanta.
