Johnny Brown

 

1926 - 2004


Johnny Brown was born 1926 in Sebring, Florida. He moved to Newnan in 1935, graduated from Newnan High School in 1945 and attended the University of Georgia where he was a trainer for the Georgia Bulldogs in 1945 and 1946. In 1946 he began sports writing at the Newnan Herald, later the Newnan Times-Herald, where he later became Sports Editor. During the same half century he was an announcer for WCOH and later was general manager at WNEA, both in Newnan. He served on both the Newnan City and Coweta County School Boards and was a Coweta County Commissioner for 16 years. In 1996 he was honored by the Georgia Press Association for his 50 years of sports writing. The multi-purpose building at the Coweta County Recreation Department was dedicated as "The Johnny Brown Center" in 2003. From 1997 to 2004 Johnny hosted a weekly TV interview show on local cable TV. Over 300 hours of the program are preserved in the Troup County Historical Society Archives. In 2004 he was elected to the Coweta County Sports Hall of Fame. Johnny succumbed to cancer on March 13, 2004. The newly-built gymnasium at Northgate High School was named in his honor in 2005. Brown died in 2004.
