Phil Schaefer
As a teenager growing up in Augusta Phil was infatuated with sports broadcasts on radio and purchased a tape recorder which he used to record his voice and sports broadcasts. He attended Ohio State and began his radio career doing play by play on the campus radio station. In 1963, he applied at WSB and was hired as assistant program director. Later he moved into the sports department covering everything from golf to NASCAR and eventually became WSB Sports Director and host of” Schaefer on Sports” and the “WSB Sports Final”. He was color man for Larry Munson on the UGA Football Network for 16 years. Schaefer also was radio voice of the Paechbowl, hosted the College Football Game of the Week and the NCAA Basketball Tournament on CBS Radio. Phil was named “Georgia Sportscaster of the Year” by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association three times. In 2010, Augusta National recognized Schaefer for having covered the Masters Golf Tournament for 45 consecutive years.
