Burke Johnson
Paul Burke Johnson was born in Washington, D.C. . He attended Morris Brown College majoring in sociology and music. In 1954, he began his radio career as a part time announcer at WERD. Two years later, he joined WAOK as a fulltime announcer; however, he was drafted in 1958 and served in the US Army. In 1960, Burke rejoined WAOK as afternoon drive host. He played music which appealed to teens and adults and was voted the most popular dj in Atlanta three years in a row. Johnson was promoted to Program Director and eventually, station manager. Burke served on the boards of several community organizations and was selected Man of The Year in 1971 by the “Ys” Men’s Club International Omega Chapter affiliated with the YMCA. He was also actively involved in the civil rights movement. He was the voice of “Inspirations across America” heard on 90 stations nationwide for over 15 years and retired in 2002. Burke lives in McDonough.
